The new Development League got underway tonight and 23 goals were scored across five games.
Spartans didn’t have to travel far as they had an away fixture to Edusport, at Ainslie Park.
The Edusport squad only arrived in Scotland two days before the match, but this didn’t reflect in what was a fairly evenly contested first half. The best chance in the first half fell to Edusport’s Barreteau and his shot from 25 yards went inches wide of the target.
Edusport’s keeper was the busier of the two in the second half pulling of some fantastic saves. It was ironic that Spartans should take the lead through a keeping error, Mair whipped in a corner and the keeper tried to push it away and pushed it into the net.
Moments later Spartans had a second corner and Mair again whipped it in, the keeper again couldn’t deal with it and Mair got his second of the night. Just before the final whistle Spartans were awarded a penalty that Girdwood dispatched.
Whitehill Welfare made the trip to Meadowbank to face Edinburgh City and secured a victory in the first half. Thomas Meldrum got a hat-trick before Johnny Scott-Mercer bagged a double.
Elsewhere Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale hosted East Kilbride and the Edinburgh side ran out 3-1 winners on the night.
BSC Glasgow entertained Cumbernauld Colts and secured all three points with a 2-0 victory.
In the highest scoring game of the night, Preston Athletic won 7-2 against Civil Service Strollers.
